Initial Launch

On October 8th, 2021, we launched with 7,000 packets of pads distributed across four communities in Kampala.

Growing Reach

We continue to expand our programs to new communities, with plans to reach more regions across Uganda.

Future Goals

Our goal is to reach 50+ communities and distribute over 100,000 pads to girls and women in need.

Our Focus Areas

Comprehensive approaches to menstrual health and women's empowerment

Health

When girls and women have access to safe and affordable sanitary materials to manage their menstruation, they decrease their risk of infections and can participate fully in daily life.

Risks of Poor Menstrual Hygiene:

  • Reproductive and urinary tract infections
  • Future infertility and birth complications
  • Spread of infections like hepatitis B and thrush

Gender Equality

Promoting menstrual health and hygiene safeguards women's dignity, privacy, bodily integrity, and self-efficacy. Awareness of menstrual health contributes to building an environment of non-discrimination where female voices are heard and girls have choices about their future.

The Environment

Every year an average woman discards about 150 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste from disposable sanitary products.

Our Environmental Initiatives:

  • Constructing hygiene facilities with proper disposal systems
  • Gender-separated facilities with lighting and handwashing stations

Teenage Motherhood

FHF partners with Community Based Organizations to equip, support, and empower teenage mothers through community outreach programs.

Our Support Includes:

  • Sensitization programs for teenage mothers
  • Providing basic needs like mama kits to expectant mothers
  • Distribution of sanitary pads, baby wear, and educational materials

Menstrual Health

Menstrual health refers to a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to the menstrual cycle. It's central to achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

Four Key Areas:

  • 1.Awareness of menstruation before menarche
  • 2.Access to hygienic menstrual materials
  • 3.Access to a private place to wash and change
  • 4.Participation in activities during menstruation

Education

The Challenge

Menstruation health continues to be constrained by cultural taboos and discriminatory social norms. The resulting lack of information leads to unhygienic and unhealthy practices.

Our Findings:
  • Participants in slum areas expressed being victims of gender-based violence during menstruation
  • More than 30% of participants in rural Mbale don't attend school during their periods
  • Most rural schools lack adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene services

Our Solution

For Her Foundation works with schools to incorporate information on menstruation into the curriculum for both girls and boys to reduce stigma and contribute to better education and health outcomes.

Our Commitment

For generations, poor menstrual health has exacerbated social and economic inequalities. We're working to change this narrative through education, access, and advocacy.
